Medicare Star Ratings Primer

If you’ve ever used medicare.gov’s Plan Finder tool, you may have noticed the Overall Plan Rating column.

How Ratings Work

Each year, Medicare calculates these ratings for Medicare health and prescription drug plans. There are over 50 different categories used as criteria to determine the final overall rating.

Medicare provides star ratings to help beneficiaries assess plan quality. In fact, there’s a useful publication on choosing quality health plans by CMS. It explains how to use plan ratings as a quality metric. At only two pages, it’s packed full of useful information including:
  • A description of what Medicare Health Plan ratings mean
  • An explanation of criteria used in calculating ratings
  • Some helpful ways to use Medicare Health Plan ratings

Finding A Plan’s Rating

If you need to find a plan’s rating, here are a few suggestions:

  • Visit Medicare’s Plan Finder and enter the plan information
  • Call 1-800-MEDICARE (TTY users should call 1-877-486-2048)
  • Contact the plan
